Sandburg Men’s XC Bests NCAA Div. I Leathernecks in Dual Meet

MACOMB — The Carl Sandburg College men’s cross country team pulled off a historic victory Friday, defeating NCAA Division I Western Illinois in a dual meet at the WIU Early Bird Invite at Spring Lake Park.

The Chargers had three of the top four finishers in the 6-kilometer race and totaled 24 points. The Leathernecks finished with 31 points.

Sandburg’s Calton Kibet (Kenya/Poiywek Secondary) was first in 19 minutes, 12.1 seconds, followed by teammate Josphat Langat (Kenya/Alliance) in second at 19:18.8. Emmanuel Kiprop (Kenya/Kericho TEA Boys’ Secondary) took fourth place for the Chargers in 20:11.4.

Rounding out Sandburg’s scoring was Nicholas Janson (Cambridge, Ill./Cambridge) in eighth in 21:46.1 and Nicholas Seaver (Industry, Ill./Rushville-Industry) in ninth at 21:48.0.

WOMEN’S RACE
Barbra Jepkirui (Kenya/St. Teresa Girls’ Secondary) and Mary Njeri Njuguna (Kenya/Turbo Girls Secondary) posted top-10 times for the Chargers in the 4K women’s race

Jepkirui was eighth in 18:00.8, while Njuguna took ninth place in 18:34.9.

WIU swept the top five spots to defeat the Chargers 50-15.
